Oh well maybe it is. I finally got round to finding the full text of a kids poem I used to love:
The Puffin
by florence jacques

There once was a puffin just the shape of a muffin,
And he lived on an island in the deep blue sea,
He ate little fishes, which were most delicious,
And he ate them for breakfast and he ate them for tea.

But this poor little puffin, he couldn't play nothin',
'Cause he didn't have no-one to play with at all.
So he sat on his island and he cried for a while, and
He felt very lonesome and he felt very small.

Then along came the fishes and they said, "If you wishes,
You can have us for playmates, instead of for tea."
Now they all play together in all kinds of weather,
And the puffin eats pancakes, like you and like me.
I knew it from one of those magazine part-work things we used to get as a kid. I think it might have been called Storyteller maybe. A magazine and a tape every week, some stories which carried on over several episodes, some which were only in one, and the odd poem or two, all illustrated and with words I think in the magazine. Long time since I tried to read or listen to any of them but I suspect my mum still has the whole set.

I remember that magazine. Didn't one of the first ones have a story about a black cat?

Gobbelino (sp?) the Witch's Cat. Except he wasn't very good at being a witch's cat, because he had blue eyes instead of green, so he ran away to find somewhere else to live.

I remember those magazines, as well - they were called Storyteller. I loved them. Mum still has all of ours up in the loft, as well.

... and our children have also now had a chance to read and enjoy -- thank you!

you've just made at least my wek, if not the entire month. I am nearly as fanatical about puffins as J4 is about badgers. Well, maybe not that much, but it's pretty serious (I once sent Adrian a postcard with a picture of a puffin and the word puffin repeated on the back as often as it would fit).

Puffins are good :-)
